Scot represents the third generation of lawyers from the Harvey family, following in the footsteps of his grandfather Frank H. Harvey, a Summit County Common Pleas Court judge for many years, and his father Frank H. Harvey, Jr., a successful Akron lawyer. Not surprisingly, Scot’s interest in the law developed during his early years and stayed with him through college. His interest in labor and employment law developed while he was pursuing his undergraduate and graduate degrees at Syracuse University, and then really took root during his studies at The Ohio State University Moritz College of Law.
After Scot’s graduation from law school, he served as a law clerk to the Honorable Sam H. Bell, Northern District of Ohio, for two years. By the time Scot had completed his clerkship, he was certain he wanted to focus on labor and employment law for the rest of his career. And that is precisely what he has done.
Scot now has nearly thirty years of experience representing both private and public sector employers in all aspects of labor and employment law. Much of Scot’s practice is geared toward helping clients avoid litigation by providing day-to-day counseling to them on workplace issues they regularly face, including situations implicating the ADA, the FMLA, and wage and hour laws. Unfortunately, lawsuits sometimes occur, and when they do, Scot is ready to defend them vigorously, using his years of experience to guide clients through all stages of the litigation process toward a favorable outcome. Scot also defends employers faced with state and federal fair employment practice administrative proceedings and “demand letters” from lawyers threatening lawsuits that companies increasingly face. In addition to counseling clients on employment issues and defending them in litigation, Scot handles traditional labor matters including labor arbitrations, union organizing drives, unfair labor practice proceedings, and collective bargaining negotiations.
Scot serves the legal community as co-chair of the Akron Bar Association’s Labor and Employment Law Section. In this role, he has helped lawyers meet their continuing legal education requirements by presenting topics at the Labor and Employment Law Section’s annual employment law seminar that are relevant to today’s workplace, including Harassment in the Modern Workplace (2018) and The FMLA and the ADA: The Basics, Legal Update, and Hot Topics (2019).
Other Personal Background information and Interests
Scot has five children who are now in their 20’s and 30’s, and his family has expanded in the last past several years with the addition of five grandchildren. Scot is also active at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, serving as an acolyte during Sunday services and having served a three-year term as its Senior Warden. Scot spends much of his spare time pursuing his love for distance running, although his competitive running career has been curtailed due to injuries.
